The NixOS manual now has a section on Emacs, thanks to @DamienCassou and myself.
The declarative package configuration of Nix helps keep ~/.emacs.d under control. I can also share exactly the same Emacs configuration between machines. The use-package system can still be used to handle loading and initialisation of emacs packages.
